The last newsletter I wrote was in April. Now, here we are, in the beginning of August. Back in April, all of us at Demarest Farm were very optimistic for the coming harvest season - and we still are as I am writing you this letter. However, our season to date has not gone the way we had hoped.
Our spring and early summer so far have been abnormally wet and cool. June was one of the wettest and coolest on record. This has affected our farm to a certain degree. Four of our scheduled Thursday Night BBQs were rained-out and our crops are running about 10 days behind schedule when it comes to ripening.
On the bright side, despite the weather we are still projecting a bumper crop of peaches, apples and pumpkins. By the time you read this letter we will have started pick-your-own peaches and we project pick-your-own apples to start around Labor Day weekend. Our own tomatoes should be ready for harvest in about another week and sweet corn is now being picked daily.
To those of you visiting our website for the first time, welcome, and we look forward to your first visit to our farm. And for the thousands of friends that visit us on a daily or weekly visit, thank you so much for your patronage and your support for agriculture in New Jersey.
Stay well – and all of us here at Demarest Farm hope to see you soon partake in a 124-year-old Bergen County tradition.
Sincerely,
The Demarest Family
